Prepaid Meters
Municipal Billing vs Prepaid Meters
With utility costs increasing and some tenants experiencing financial issues, prepaid is one way for them to only use what they can afford.
Although we do our utmost to ensure the tenants, we place have great credit scores and their background checks are good as well. We cannot predict the future and with everything that has happened in South Africa over the last year it is not surprising that some tenants have found themselves in a financially difficult situation.
With this in mind we always suggest to our landlords that they install prepaid water and electricity meters to their properties.
This helps to avoid any issues when it comes to the recovery of municipal bills, that tenants accrue whilst living at the property.
Besides making sure your municipal bill does not skyrocket below are some advantages of installing a prepaid meter system.
Advantages of prepaid metering for electricity and water:
- Tenants can purchase prepaid electricity from most retail shops and banking apps
- Meter tampering is reduced as with the billing report you will be able to see lower purchases compared to previous months.
- Reduced chances of having a large bill sent to you from the municipality as standard meter readings are not done every month and estimates can be incorrect.
- Tenants pay for what they use
- Tenants are able to budget more carefully without guessing what the bill will be at the end of the month.
The meters are connected after the municipality meters and ultimately the landlord is still responsible for the municipal account, but is normally paid with the money they receive from the prepaid meters.
